Why is Digital Citizenship Important In Schools Today?
It is becoming more and more common to incorporate technology into the educational classroom.
Teachers are encouraged to engage students in interactive learning activities using Ipads, cell phones, laptops and more.
But although children of the 21st Century are learning how to use different technologies, they are not learning how to safely and courteously navigate these technologies. It is important that children learn how to safely interact with other people online.
It is very important that children are using technology appropriately at school, but the biggest problems we face today are related to the people who abuse technology outside the classroom when they are online at home.
"When students see adults using technologies inappropriately, they can assume it is the norm. This leads to inappropriate technology behavior on the part of students." (Ribble).

- Etiquette: Children should know what rules they should follow online, both in and out of the classroom.
- Commerce: Children should know how to buy goods online and how to protect their identity while doing it.
- Education: Children should be able to find credible sources online and use cell phone, tablets and other PDA's for classroom activities appropriately.
- Communication: Children should be able to use cell phone and tablets appropriately in the classroom and should use appropriate grammar vocabulary when submitting classroom assignments and sending emails.
- Access: Children should have access to technology in multiple ways. If they do not have access at home, then teachers should find a way to accommodate them in the classroom.
- Rights: Children should have knowledge of their digital rights.
- Responsibility: Children should give credit for the resources they use and should purchase music instead of illegally downloading it.
- Safety: Children and teachers should be aware of the physical effects of technology use and should provide safe conditions for the use of technology.
- Security: Children should be aware that they should maintain software updates, protect their computers from viruses, and protect their identities.
